Background:

This project was made in the course "GK 5: Service design" in 2019. It was our first meeting with service design and designing brand identities, and we were free to choose what to work with within the topic "lasting schallenges". We chose the Norwegian education system and career guidance as this was something we both had mixed feelings about.

Methods:

During the project, we spoke to a total of 135 students, teachers, counselors and parents. Among other things, we have observed and given lectures in the subject of educational choices (Utdanningsvalg) in secondary school, interviewed, arranged workshops and participated in educational choice meetings for parents.

Throughout the project, we took the insight the users gave us back to the design studio where we developed ideas and prototypes. We then brought the ideas and prototypes back to the user for further input. This made it easier to trust the design process and have the user's needs in focus.

Findings:

Some of our key findings were that youth view the choice of high school as overwhelming and final. Many pupils believe that this choice will determine the rest of their lives. We saw that the quality of career guidance pupils receive at school varies greatly. Many teachers do not have competence in career guidance and the subject is often downgraded by the school management. According to the NOVA survey in 2017, the pupils' most important supporter was the parents. Nevertheless, the parents are to a very small extent included by the school in the educational choice process. The result is that they guide their children based on assumptions, misinformation and myths.

Based on the insights we found we made 6 demands for our service:

- The service must understand young people's situation and take them seriously
- The service must function independently of the consultant's competence
- The service must make the consultant's time more efficient
- The service must be experienced as personal and appeal to young people
- The service must provide basic information in a simple and clear way
- The service must include the guardians
